The Parish Church of St John Baptist is open for all pilgrims from 10am on weekdays. Sunday service is at 10am but those wishing to attend will need to book a seat. Holy Trinity is open for Sunday worship at 10am with St Lawrence’s morning Eucharist at 10.30am. Again, booking is essential.
Whether here to see the town or to worship, visitors are assured of a warm welcome. In the Parish of Cirencester with Watermoor, there are three Anglican churches.
St John Baptist is one of the largest parish churches in England and has been a place of worship for well over a thousand years.
The church is open every day of the year and welcomes thousands of visitors a year as well as its regular worshipping community who all see the church as a source of peace and prayer. Although full of history, the Parish Church of St John Baptist is a living building for people of all ages and all backgrounds, and everyone is valued here. It has a history dating back many hundreds of years.
Holy Trinity Church, Watermoor is a lovely church with a warm atmosphere and enjoys its own Parish Hall nearby. The worship style here is a little more relaxed and on the first Sunday of each month the music is led by a group of musicians and singers. There is a special area for young children to have quiet activities. Older children can attend the Trinity Kids group. The children all come in to take Communion during the service.
Of particular interest is the reredos behind the main altar. An excellent guide book by Mr Tony Clack is available in the church showing the church’s history.
St Lawrence, Chesterton is the most modern of the three worship centres and was built in the 1950s as a dual purpose building. It therefore has the shortest history of all. St Lawrence’s is used throughout the week by the community but on Sundays the East end is opened up to show the Altar and Sanctuary. Here there is a faithful worshipping community who are very supportive of each other and any visitor will be assured of a very warm welcome as well as coffee after service and often cake with the biscuits!
